Jennie Melka, age 101, of Cambria Location, Negaunee, passed away peacefully Friday evening, October 14, 2016 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility.
Jennie was born August 9, 1915 in Negaunee to Italian immigrants Frank and Rose Luca, the oldest of seven children. She attended Negaunee St. Paul Catholic School and then worked for many years at the H.W. Gossard Co. in Ishpeming, retiring as a Supervisor. Jennie married Leslie J. Melka and they moved to Cambria Location in 1938, where they raised their son and lived for the remainder of their lives.
Mrs. Melka was a devout member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. She attended Mass every day until she could no longer drive, at the age of 95. Jennie most loved spending time with her family, especially cooking her weekly Sunday brunch and holiday meals. She also enjoyed spending time at the family camp in Republic.
Surviving are three grandchildren: Mark (Cheryl) Melka and Larry Melka, both of Negaunee Township, and Paul Melka of Vulcan; seven great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leslie Melka, Sr. in 1989; her son Leslie Melka, Jr. in 2010; a grandson, Michael Melka in 2009; and her siblings: Dominc, Angela, Jimmy, Frank, Theresa and Maragaret.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, October 18th at Koskey Funeral Home with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00 am until the time of services at 1:00 pm at the funeral home on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Paul Catholic Church Memorial Fund in Mrs. Melka’s memory.
